verb to be is called the linking verb, it connects the subject with the word that gives information about the subject in a sentence.
Linking verbs connect the subject with the rest of the sentence. 

Types of verb to be

There are two common types of use of the verb ‘to be‘.
The first use is as a main verb and the second use is as an auxiliary verb.
This is also called a helping verb.

linking verb does not describe an action, most other verbs describe an action. Linking verbs gives us more information about the subject of the sentence. linking verb does not take a direct object.

Examples of the verb to be as a linking verb, 

  1.  I am a teacher.
  2. You are a student.
  3. Jane is a doctor.

More definitions

  1. Be verb is a verb (such as be, become, feel, appear, etc.) that joins the subject with a noun or adjective that identifies the subject.
  2. A verb that connects the subject with the rest part of the sentence. But in the simplest way.

Most common verbs to be

 Am, is, are, were, was, been, being,

  • He is a good player.
  • You are my teacher.

In the above simple sentences, the word (is) and the word (are) are be verbs. Because they create a relationship of the subject with the rest part of the sentence.

  • am sorry for my mistake.
  • Sara is a good student.
  • She was working in a school.
  • The taste of lemon is sour.
  • am tired today.
  • am a human being.
  • She is hungry.
  • You are kind.
  • am a girl.
  • You are a boy.
  • Are you ready?

In negative sentences, we use the word no after the verb.

Example of negative sentences

  • am not a teacher.
  • We are not there.
  • I am not a girl.

And in interrogative sentences verb comes first.
